Ballantynes FIRE



On the 23rd of October 1947 smoke rose from the cellar it was cup week and had approx 300 people and 447 staff.
Percy stringer a staff member was the first to notice and asked Eric Drake (another staff member) to call the fire brigade for a cellar fire.
Percy stinger first observed the fire at about 3:35pm.
The staff attempted to put out the fire as the fire brigade thought it minor and arrived 10 minutes lates ill-equipped with only enough equipment for a minor cellar fire smoke was rising from the 1st-floor window but the fire brigade thought it an exaggeration and thought evacuation was not necessary.
The staff started to evacuate people a while later although over 40 staff died.

Death of Poet James.K.Baxter



One of the most accomplished poets died on the 22nd of October 1972.
He died in Auckland at the age of 46 soon after leaving the commune he had founded in Jerusalem several years before. He was buried on the 25 of October on tribal land after a full Maori tangihanga in Jerusalem.
Most of his time was spent looking after Drug dealers and alcoholics.

Peter Snell WINS his second OLYMPIC GOLD



Peter Snell wins his second gold in the Tokyo Olympics easily winning by a whole 15 meters.
In the same race in which he won his second Olympic gold, he also beat the previous world record by 2 and a half seconds.
He was later criticised for not smashing the world record as he could have but was already a whole 15 meters and beating the world record but didn't see the need nor point.
This was accomplished on the 21st of  1964.

Judge Declares Treaty Worthless



On the 17th of October 1997, Chief Justice Sir James Prendergast’s declared the treaty of Waitangi worthless and nullity when deciding the case of Wi Parata a block of land which was meant to have a school built on it but when no school appeared the crown took the land and claimed it as there own. Prendergast said that the treaty of Waitangi was worthless because it had been signed between a civilised nation and group of savages who were not capable of signing a treaty.

Main Body of NZEF sails to war



On the 19th of October 1914 (during the first world war) the main body of NZEF sails to war including 10 grey-painted troopships, just under 4000 horses, 8500 men and escorted by 4 giant warships. This was the second major department following the 1400 strong Samoan advance which had left around 2 months earlier from Wellington.

Anti terror raids




On the 15 of October 2007, 18 people were arrested for participating in anti-terror raids and among the people arrested was tuehoe activist tame itte suspected for running military-style training camps for those people participating in the raids. Another an extra 3 people and it were taken to court the three extra people charged against participating in the criminal group and all possessing firearm offences aswell.

Fortitude
